1. The game of chess is said to originate from Shaturanga or Chaturanga. The game was invented by a 6th century Indian Philosopher.
2. The form of chess we play today came from Southern Europe in the 15th century, the game quickly spread throughout Europe.
3. Back in medieval times the Pawns in a game of chess were looked at as labourers. They were the front line and were easily ''sacrificed'' to save the lives of the more valuable pieces''
4. The Deep Blue chess playing computer weighs an astonishing 1.4 tonnes.
5. Chess was once a four player game and used dice!
6. Chess was refined by the Arabs into a game of pure skill.
7. After spreading into Europe, Chess was taken up by a courtly society for whom King, Queen, Bishop, Knight & Castle were significant symbols.
8. Whilst the moves of the pieces quickly became established, the size and shape varied enormously until the 19th Century when the famous design of Henry Staunton became accepted as an international standard and this remains the basis for all tournament chess sets today.
